Job Title: Forest Health Forester Status: RFT
Supervisor: Forest Manager Rate: Minimum Wage $20


SCOPE OF WORK:
This position shall be responsible for coordinating the Forest Health management program. It assists with other forest management departments, including Harvest Preparation, Forest Development, Fire Preparedness, and Forest Inventory. Additionally, the position will be responsible for developing and coordinating forest ecology surveys.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must have the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the following:
1. Coordinate the MTE Integrated Pest Management Handbook, and maintain updates.
2. Communicate forest health policies with staff, other professional groups, Tribal leaders and local people through meetings and educational opportunities.
3. Assist in developing and writing silviculture prescriptions.
4. Forest pest management practices: designing sampling methods and collecting data for forest insects and diseases.
5. Communicate in a professional and efficient manner to maintain effective relationships with employees, and others, to further the success of the MTE mission.
6. Research, develop and implement cost sharing programs with Tribal, State, and Federal agencies
7. Identifying forestry habitat types and ecosystems in the forest; analyzes their relationship with timber growth and yield; explores their relationship with soils and geology; and assesses their implications for various silvicultural or management decisions.
8. Designing sampling methods and collecting non-timber data pertinent to treatment sites and determines non-timber resources needs on those sites. Collects data on vegetation, forest insects and diseases and other ecological criteria to ascertain quantity and quality of these resources, monitor long-term trends, and analyze treatment effects. Works with MITW environmental services department
9. Provide technical recommendations to address non-timber effects to proposed timber treatments as part of the silvicultural prescription development process.
10. Recommend management practices based on current research or experience to enhance or restore timber and or non-timber resources where compatible with regular forest management goals.
11. Perform field reconnaissance and stand exam.
12. Remain current with forest health threats, ie; Forest insects and diseases.
13. Wisconsin’s Forestry Best Management Practices for Water Quality.
14. Writing reports, memorandums, and correspondence within short timeframes
15. Perform boundary layout and use GPS.
16. Assist in timber cruises to assess timber volume.
17. Perform field data collection, data entry, and managing departmental GIS database.
18. Provide written and/or verbal updates on activities, as required.
19. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works outdoors for extended periods in adverse conditions throughout the year. Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs. Must wear appropriate safety apparel and equipment and comply with all safety policies and practices of MTE. Must operate an ATV/UTV safely for extended periods of time.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four year College or University in Forestry or Natural Resources, and two years of experience in forestry, with experience in forest pathology or forest entomology preferred.
 Required to be knowledgeable of Silvics of the region and also required work experience emphasis in one or more of the following areas: Integrated resource management, planning, knowledge of forest pest biology, Silviculture Prescription Writing, Harvest Administration, and Forest Development.
 With proven skills in planning, leading, organizing and monitoring forest management related activities.
 With an additional knowledge of; habitat identification, computer skills in excel and word, GIS, research capabilities, and data management.
 Required to possess a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and be insurable under MTE’s standards.
 Commercial Pesticide Applicators license and certification must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.
