SCOPE OF WORK:
Menominee Tribal Enterprises is seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to join our Prescribed Fire and Fuels Crew. The BIL Fuels Technician is a temporary, full time position with an expected duration of two years, or until Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding is exhausted. Primary responsibilities of this position include assisting in the planning, preparation, and implementation of prescribed fire operations and manual and mechanical hazardous fuels treatments. Duties also involve monitoring fire effects, smoke behavior, and fuel moisture conditions to ensure safe and effective project outcomes. The employee will conduct field assessments to identify and evaluate hazardous fuel conditions and support the development of appropriate treatment strategies. As needed, this position will assist the Fuels Specialist in leading fuels personnel of varying crew sizes and will support wildland fire suppression efforts on the Menominee Reservation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist in the leadership of the Menominee Fuels Management program.
2. Supports wildland fire suppression, fire prevention, and fire education activities when needed.
3. Assist in resolving problem situations encountered when performing a wide variety of fire planning assignments.
4. Assists with reviews of project plans and makes recommendations on appropriate levels of monitoring.
5. Provides basic assistance in monitoring to assess fire and fire suppression impacts on the forest and in the communities.
6. Participates in the development and refinement of fuel monitoring characteristics, frequency of visits, subject to be measured, and data storage and analysis techniques.
7. Provide project specific field data to assist in the planning, developing, and implementing fuels management projects. Provides input and recommends strategies for fuels management.
8. Assists with routine project assessments which determine the presence or absence of hazardous wildland fuels.
9. Serves on prescribed fire and fuels projects in positions for which qualified.
10. Assists in conducting field reconnaissance of prescribed fire/fuels treatment units, assists with summarizing field findings and makes basic recommendations on appropriate prescriptive criteria for meeting program objectives.
11. Assists and participates in the drafting of prescribed fire/fuels management plans.
12. Assists with the implementation of prescribed fire and mechanical fuels management activities.
13. Ensures the welfare and safety of themselves and others in all aspects of project implementation.
14. Assists and participates in fuels management reviews, proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and after action reviews.
15. May supervise fuels crew and summer seasonal employees on project sites in the absence of supervisor.
16. Assists with the record keeping and maintenance of fuels vehicles and mechanical equipment.
17. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working holiday’s, weekends and extensive travel are required during periods of high fire danger &/or resource demands, as well as attendance at formal training, meetings & conferences, etc. Work is generally performed in a combination of an office setting and the field. Wildland fires suppression, prescribed burning, & fuels treatment project work requires strenuous physical exertion of all types over uneven terrain. This requires the wearing of appropriate safety equipment and apparel, and maintaining strict adherence to accepted safety procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must possess a valid Wisconsin State driver’s license and be insurable under MTE’s current policy. Candidates should hold a high school diploma or equivalent combined with relevant training and field experience. Qualifying training and experience must include, at a minimum, Qualified as a Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1), with demonstrated commitment and ability to progress toward Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4), Single Resource Engine Boss (ENGB), and Firing Boss (FIRB) qualifications.
The selected candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, drug screening, and the Work Capacity Test (Arduous level) consistent with wildland fire position requirements.
Former employees of Menominee Tribal Enterprises must demonstrate a positive employment history, including satisfactory job performance and adherence to organizational policies and standards.
