Job Title: BIL Wildland Firefighter (2 positions)                               Status: 1-2 years TFT

SCOPE OF WORK:

Menominee Tribal Enterprises is seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to join our Prescribed Fire and Fuels Crew. This is a temporary, full time position with an expected duration of one to two years, or until Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding is exhausted.  This entry-level position offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable field experience in wildland fire and fuels management. The primary focus will be supporting prescribed fire planning and operations, fuel reduction projects, and fire suppression activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge, skill, and willingness to perform the following:

  1. Assist in implementing the Menominee Fuels Management Program, including prescribed fire operations and mechanical fuels treatments.
  2. Participate in wildland fire suppression operations, including engine and hand crew assignments.
  3. Utilize hand tools, power equipment, and fire engines in support of fire control and fuels management tasks.
  4. Construct fire lines using hand tools and chainsaws; extinguish burning materials using dirt, water, or backpack pumps.
  5. Patrol and monitor firelines during and after burn operations to detect and suppress flare-ups or hotspots.
  6. Maintain and clean equipment and tools after use; assist with inventory and repair of firefighting gear.
  7. Prepare firelines, set up hose lays, operate pumps and water delivery systems during prescribed fires or suppression activities.
  8. Assist in the implementation of ignition operations such as backfiring, burnout, or drip torch use under supervision.
  9. Participate in fuel monitoring, data collection, and project documentation.
  10. Engage in training, proficiency drills, safety briefings, and after-action reviews.
  11. Promote safety and situational awareness for self and others during all operations.
  12. Contribute to the mentoring and training of less-experienced crewmembers.
  13. Perform duties under challenging conditions, including long hours, rugged terrain, inclement weather, and during weekends or holidays.
  14. Participate in off-reservation fire assignments ("western details") during high national preparedness levels (PL3 or above).
  15. Assist with non-fire duties such as facility maintenance, groundskeeping, and general labor during off-season or non-fire activity periods.
  16. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Availability for extensive travel, weekend and holiday shifts, and interagency training and coordination during peak fire seasons is required.
  • Duties involve a combination of office work and strenuous fieldwork in rugged and remote terrain.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times, with strict adherence to safety protocols

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license; must be insurable under MTE’s current policy.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (a combination of education, training, and relevant experience will be considered).
  • Must possess a current Red Card with a minimum of FFT2 qualification.
  • Ability to pass a medical exam and the Work Capacity Test (Arduous Level); must maintain physical fitness and required certifications.
