SCOPE OF WORK:
This position is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the log yard while ensuring that MTE manages its log inventory for value.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must have the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the following:
- Staffing the Log Yard operations with minimal production interruptions that are under direct supervision.
- Safety policies and procedures and enforce compliance with employees under direct supervision.
- Lumber species, grades, and volume estimates.
- Log storage, wetting, sorting, tagging, waxing, fungicide sprays, transportation, and stacking practices to maintain log quality.
- Heavy equipment operations.
- Scaling logs to determine quality and volume.
- Identifying veneer quality logs and implementing saw log and veneer log sale procedures.
- Managing reports, time and attendance, and records of department activities.
- Ensuring FIFO (first in, first out) inventory control practices.
- Manage and maintain an accurate bolt wood inventory.
- Perform light maintenance on the log sprinklers, adjust amount of water, and spray direction.
- Motivate employees to achieve deadlines and maximize output.
- Implement correct action with employees objectively and fairly.
- Communicate in a professional manner to maintain effective relationships with employees.
- Conduct regular meetings with staff to set key action plans.
- Participate Ensure staff cleans, and maintains the yard appearance including snow removal.
- Maintain accurate perpetual log inventory system.
- Interview and select employees in accordance with policy and practices of MTE.
- in meetings with MTE President, committees and MTE Board of Directors.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work in extreme hot, cold, dusty, noisy environment. Must be able to lift up to 75lbs. Must wear appropriate safety apparel and equipment and comply with all safety policies and practices of MTE.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Prefer minimum of 2-year Forestry Technician degree. Requires a minimum of 2 years experience in log grading operations. Prefer a valid MTE Heavy Equipment Certification. Requires completion of log scaling and grading courses. Requires communication and interpersonal skills required to supervise staff. Three years of supervisory management preferred. Must possess good work ethic with excellent work attendance and be a team player.
SUPEVISION EXERCISED:
Directly supervises Log Scalers, Tagger, Timbco, Front End, Log Hauler Operators.
